July 07, 2014 Robert McDonald, the man nominated by President Obama to run the Department of Veterans Affairs, grew up in a staunch Republican family in Arlington Heights, where he was a Boy Scout, star athlete and top student, and even wrote prep sports stories for the Daily Herald's former competitor, the Arlington Day newspaper.
