Massachusetts author releases a book emphasizing the environmental issues and climate activism from the eyes of a 12-year-old.

PLYMOUTH, Mass. - Author Chris Casavant has released The Greatest Cause of Mia Dubois, an inspiring modern-day story of a 12-year-old as she learns about critical climate challenges and how she could make a positive difference through organized action. With the younger generations showing increasing interest in climate matters, Casavant’s book provides an excellent backdrop to raise awareness of environmental issues, climate justice and activism.

The story follows Mia Dubois as she experiences the debilitating effects of Hurricane Reggie when it blows down a pine tree, damaging her home in Plymouth, Massachusetts, and putting her elderly neighbor in danger. As the town grapples with the aftermath of the hurricane, Mia’s school remains closed for a few weeks. So, she visits her uncle in Chicago. It’s when she learns about climate change and the unequal treatment some communities frequently encounter when it comes to having a clean environment.

This newfound knowledge inspires Mia to start an after-school club with her friends and stand up for an often-neglected group of residents of a city far away from her home. She gains more insights into climate change and climate justice during this process and learns powerful lessons about organizing and friendship. Most importantly, Mia discovers how hard work and dedication could empower anyone to make a difference and bring positive change.

Casavant is a sixth-grade social studies teacher in Marshfield, Massachusetts, who runs a school club to help students learn more about climate-related issues. Being around middle-schoolers on a daily basis, it became clear to him that many of them care about the planet but know very little about the causes and results of climate change.

“I was inspired to write this book to try and provide a way for kids to learn about climate change ─ and some of the climate injustices in the world – and be entertained at the same time,” Casavant says. “I hope this book inspires kids, at the very least, to be aware of the impact of their actions and the importance of protecting our planet.”

The Greatest Cause of Mia Dubois can be purchased online through SDP Publishing, Amazon, Barnes & Noble and other retailers.
