Braking system tried to stop CTA train at O’Hare, officials said

March 25, 2014

An automatic braking system attempted to stop the eight-car CTA train that was propelled off the tracks at the O’Hare station at 2:50 a.m. Monday, authorities said. National Transportation Safety Board investigator Ted Turpin said Tuesday the train entered the station at O’Hare at a speed of 25 mph. Although that is normal for entering the station, the speed gives the 200-ton train a lot of momentum.
