CIHL and Junior Tigers Announce Scotiabank Partnership

September 15, 2016

The CIHL, Hong Kong's first elite ice hockey league, and its junior club affiliation, the Hong Kong Junior Tigers, are pleased to announce a new partnership with Scotiabank. The partnership sees the leading Canadian bank support the development of ice hockey in Hong Kong through a variety of CIHL and Junior Tigers programmes during the 2016-2017 season.

The Scotiabank Island League for Hong Kong's best under-10 players provides a new competitive option for some of the city's most talented young players. Like all Junior Tigers programmes, a low coach-to-student ratio ensures that young players maximize their development in this four-team league. In addition to taking title sponsorship of the league, Scotiabank will also sponsor one of the Island League teams.

New this season, the Scotiabank Island League provides young players with the opportunity to grow and develop their skills, while being coached by CIHL players. In addition to its league and team support, Scotiabank will also provide scholarships for talented players in need of financial assistance.

The CIHL is also delighted to announce that Scotiabank will be title sponsor for this year's Adopt a School Programme. The popular Scotiabank Adopt a School Programme has been an integral part of the CIHL since its first season in 2011, with more than 300 students from across Hong Kong and Macau participating last year. Each week, CIHL players and coaches visit a school in Hong Kong to introduce students to ice hockey via a comprehensive lesson to teach basic hockey skills prior to a small game or scrimmage. For many students, the CIHL is their first experience of ice hockey and many students have since become fans of the sport.

"Scotiabank is proud to support hockey at all levels, particularly kids community hockey." said John Doig, Executive Vice-President & Chief Marketing Officer. "We are pleased to share our passion for the sport and to help inspire a new generation of players in Hong Kong to reach their goals both on and off the ice."

From the interest sparked through the Adopt a School Programme, the CIHL, in 2013, created an after-school extracurricular activity, which this year will be supported by Scotiabank. The CIHL Scotiabank Ball Hockey Programme aims to teach fundamental hockey skills alongside sportsmanship and team work, and is led by CIHL coaches and players. The weekly session includes a combination of skills training and games, with schools across Hong Kong invited to take part.

Established in 2011 as the city's first full contact ice hockey league, the CIHL has led the growth and development of the sport in Hong Kong. Fast, competitive and entertaining the CIHL is comprised of four teams, with Scotiabank taking title sponsorship of the South China Sharks, CIHL champions in 2015-2016.

"Scotiabank is a strong supporter of ice hockey in Canada and abroad. We are proud to extend this support across Asia-Pacific." said Peter Heidinger, Managing Director & Head, Global Banking and Markets, Asia Pacific at Scotiabank. "The partnership with the CIHL and the Hong Kong Junior Tigers comes as a perfect complement to our recent efforts to promote hockey in Singapore and Australia, a reflection of our love for the sport and our goal to positively impact our local communities."

"We are delighted to welcome Scotiabank as a partner of the CIHL and the Hong Kong Junior Tigers for the 2016-2017 season," said Gregory Smyth, CIHL and Junior Tigers co-founder and director. "Our aim is to grow and develop ice hockey in Hong Kong, Macau and Southern China. With Scotiabank's support, we are able to provide more opportunities to both introduce students to the game as well as to nurture the talent of some of our city's most talented junior players."

The puck drops on the 2016-2017 CIHL season on October 6, 2016, while Junior Tigers players begin their programmes in September.
