Conviction vacated in Aurora boy's 1996 slaying

Kane County prosecutors are weighing their options after an Illinois appellate court vacated the conviction and ordered a new trial for a former Montgomery man serving a 70-year prison term in the 1996 slaying of a 6-year-old Nicholas "Nico" Contreras of Aurora. Mark A. Downs convinced the appellate court the trial court committed plain error in instructing the jury regarding the definition of reasonable doubt.
