Kane freezer failure spawns call for new morgue

December 05, 2013

Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen expressed grief Wednesday about the black eye the county took when a freezer in the coroner's office failed on Thanksgiving. The accompanying partial meltdown of the bodies inside made headlines in print, radio and TV. Lauzen said there should be a full inventory of the facility needs in Coroner Rob Russell's office, and he pointed out Russell has had a full year in office to achieve that. Russell said he notified the media about the freezer failure to be transparent about the expenses of his office as his costs have been under heavy scrutiny in the 2014 budget process. His inventory of needs tells him he needs a new building.
