OnPoint Community Credit Union Supports Japanese Relief Effort

April 05, 2011

Credit union will partner with Mercy Corps and Peace Winds to provide shelter and relief items to affected areas.

OnPoint Community Credit Union today announced that, following the devastating earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan, they will conduct a matching funds campaign to benefit Mercy Corps' and Peace Winds' relief efforts in Japan.

OnPoint will match all donations made to Mercy Corps from March 31 through April 29, dollar-for-dollar, up to $10,000. To qualify, donations to Mercy Corps can be made at any of OnPoint's 19 local branches or online at OnPoint's Mercy Corps fundraising page.

Portland-based Mercy Corps and Peace Winds have worked together numerous times over the past decade to respond to disasters. The partnership combines Peace Winds' Japanese base with Mercy Corps' experience in responding to disasters around the world.

Funds from OnPoint's match campaign will be used to provide shelter and food in addition to supporting work that will improve access to clean water and sanitation. Funds will also be used to bring Mercy Corps' signature Comfort for Kids post-trauma assistance program to children and caregivers that have been affected.

"Supporting global relief efforts is a natural extension of the credit union philosophy of people helping people," said OnPoint Community Credit Union President and CEO Rob Stuart. "Our thoughts go out to those in Japan as they struggle to cope with the aftermath, and we sincerely hope this donation will help in their rebuilding and recovery efforts."
