August 19, 2017 ProAmpac won First Place in the Flexible Packaging Flexo Print Process category and also Best of Show from among 200 entries in the 31st packagePRINTING Excellence Awards. ProAmpac, a large global flexible packaging manufacturer, won two top honors in the 31st packagePRINTING Excellence Awards. The competition was conducted earlier and announced this month by the North American Publishing Company (NAPCO) media group’s “packagePRINTING,” a magazine and information resource for the package printer and converter trades. The award names Sunrise Grower’s Cherry Berry frozen fruit bag “best of show” from among nearly 200 entries in all categories of the competition, and with “first place” in the Flexible Packaging: Flexo printing process category. The competition included print entries from corrugated to folding cartons to labels as well as flexible packaging. “This is a high-wire act in printing,” said Gary Munsch Facility Print Production Manager in ProAmpac’s Auburn, Wash. facility that produced the winning package. The design requires generating a photographic, 3-D-like depth-of-field color-clarity in perfect register on a thin, flexible, stretchable polyethylene substrate material with a varnished matte finish that forms the bag for Sunrise Grower’s organic frozen berries. “It’s a technical challenge even for experts,” Munsch said. The secret to success is control through every step of the process of producing the pouch – from artwork, plate making and printing – to having great suppliers, Munsch added. “Control means having the right material to make the plates for our Windmoeller & Hoelscher presses to custom inks that provide visual impact and durability in frozen food cases,” said Munsch. “This award reinforces the importance of rigorous process control throughout the entire value chain,” said Millie Nuno, director, global marketing. “We select the resin system to make the best polyethylene (PE) film for the customer’s need; manufacture the plates that enable the super-quality printing the award has recognized; and, finally, we calibrate the presses to generate precision impressions on this difficult-to-control PE material that’s so great as a flexible package,” Nuno explained.
