Sobremesa Home(TM) Makes the Case for Staying at the Table

October 22, 2026

Founded by two sisters-in-law, the family-owned Napa Valley and San Diego brand brings sobremesa, the Spanish and Latin American tradition of lingering long after the meal, to modern entertaining, with artisan-crafted tableware for people who want more time together, not less.

NAPA VALLEY - Dinner arrives at the door, gets eaten in front of a screen and the evening moves on. It’s efficient and it’s quietly costing something. Sobremesa Home is making the case for a different approach: taking time, cooking for friends and lingering at the table the way families in Spain, Argentina and across the Spanish-speaking world always have for centuries. The time after the meal in these cultures is called “the sobremesa” and it is when the stories come out and the conversation deepens. This fall, Sobremesa Home brings that spirit to the table through a collection of artisan-crafted serveware and décor, available now at SobremesaHome.com. U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy released an official advisory titled Our Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation. The report notes that even prior to the pandemic, about half of U.S. adults reported experiencing measurable levels of loneliness. It explicitly highlights American Time Use Survey data showing that average in-person time spent with friends fell from roughly 60 minutes per day in 2003 to 20 minutes per day in 2020.

Quality time at the dinner table isn’t nostalgia; it’s well grounded. Researchers who study happiness keep arriving at the same simple conclusions; people who share meals more often tend to be happier and feel more connected and even having one’s phone out at the table makes time together less enjoyable. Chapter 3 of the 2025 World Happiness Report focuses entirely on "Sharing meals with others". The researchers analyzed data from the Gallup World Poll across 142 countries and concluded that the frequency of social dining has an exceptionally strong impact on subjective well-being. Specifically, for many populations (such as in North America), transitioning from dining alone to regularly sharing meals (8 or more a week) boosts happiness and life satisfaction by an amount equivalent to or stronger than doubling one's income. Sobremesa Home’s answer is a valued one: set a beautiful table, put the phones away and give the people you love a reason to stay.

Sobremesa Home began at two family tables. Co-founder Renata Campion was born in Argentina, where lingering long after a meal was simply part of her everyday life, and moved to California as a young girl. Co-founder Maura Wilson grew up one of six children in Terra Linda, Calif., where her family of eight sat down to dinner together every night. Decades later, as sisters-in-law and lifelong friends with a combined 30 years of design and retail experience, they realized they had learned the same lesson at two very different tables: the meal is only the beginning. What started as an ongoing conversation about the pieces that made their own gatherings feel special eventually became a shared brand built on the belief that the right pieces can shape how a space feels and how people come together.

Campion explained, “This started as something personal, long before it was a business. In Argentina, where I was born, nobody gets up from the table when the plates are cleared. That’s when the real conversation starts. Maura and I have spent decades at each other's tables for family dinners, holidays and weekend gatherings and those are the nights that give life its meaning. So much of life now happens on a screen but the table is still where we come back to each other. Our collection was born from those moments when a beautiful table makes you want to sit down, settle in and stay a little longer.”

Sobremesa Home’s collection moves easily from spontaneous weeknight dinners to milestone celebrations. Hand-glazed serving pieces bring warmth to an autumn wedding table or a quiet dinner for two, while the brand’s signature Tapenade Bowl turns a simple spread of charcuterie into something a little more special. Highlights include Gemstone glassware hand-painted in Poland, hand-carved olive wood boards from Tunisia and artisan-forged cheese cleavers. Every piece, whether designed by the founders or sourced from artisans, is chosen not only for how it looks, but for how it feels to use, share and live with.

Wilson added, “There were eight of us at the dinner table every night growing up and that’s where I learned who my family was. Renata and I have watched each other host hundreds of dinners over the years, so we know exactly what people reach for and use. Every piece we choose is meant to feel a little like an heirloom already, whether it's a Friendsgiving feast, a crisp night outdoors or a quiet evening by the fire with someone you love.”

At the heart of every collection is the philosophy of sobremesa: the moments around the meal can matter just as much as the meal itself. Sobremesa Home's pieces are made to become part of a home's rituals: the drink poured into a favorite glass, the backyard harvest and a friend's homemade bread, the small things that turn into memories without anyone noticing at the time.

The brand's approach also reflects a growing appreciation for objects with a story, something Campion and Wilson say comes naturally since they're family first and business partners second. Rather than chasing trends, the collection is built around pieces meant to be used, gifted, collected, and eventually passed down, much like the family heirlooms the founders have treasured and collected over the years.

As fall turns to the holidays, Sobremesa Home has one suggestion for hosts: let go of perfect. What makes a night memorable is presence, so the founders suggest a simple ritual: place a basket by the door for phones. Create a practice for connection. Often the best part of the night happens after the plates are cleared, when someone opens a special bottle, the conversation takes new directions, laughter grows and everyone decides to stay just a little longer. That is the essence of sobremesa and it is the philosophy at the heart of Sobremesa Home. Beautiful pieces set the table and connection is what makes people linger.
