U-46 to lay off hundreds of teachers, support staffers, but recalls expected
March 18, 2015 The Elgin Area School District U-46 school board approved dismissing 263 teachers, roughly 200 of whom will be recalled for the next school year, as well as 16 first-, second- and third-year probationary teachers, and three unionized support staff members, 229 nonunion support personnel, six funded project support staff, and two administrative employees. "There is no RIF that is not disruptive, but by targeting we were able to limit the number of teachers that might be affected," U-46 Human Resources Director Melanie Meidel said.
